2022 Home Decor Trends: A reaction to what is happening in the world.

October 28, 2021

Sometimes decor trends are a celebration and other times an adjustment to current circumstances. Designers are gravitating to the latter again for 2022. With the right blueprint for success, your room makeovers can be beautiful.

Here’s what we see for the coming year in home decor.

The lessons of the pandemic continue

Homes that can function as places for work and recreation are still important even as
the pandemic subsides. How to approach these setups has evolved, in a good way.

When we converted kitchen tables into school desks, bedrooms into Zoom rooms, and dining rooms into offices, it was out of necessity. What we’ve learned since is that we need to be able to switch off school and work. We need to mentally leave behind the classroom and office even when they are located at home.

Designers are discouraging setups in open rooms. They encourage them in smaller, semi-enclosed, or previously unused spaces. The goal is to provide as much physical separation as possible to contain the school/work part of our day from the rest of our family life.

Minimalism from necessity

Repurposed and minimalist decor has been on the rise, trending along with greener and more sustainable choices. Reasonable consumption and mindful shopping are influencing 2022. A “real-world intrusion” pushing the minimalist trend: The current situation at our coastal shipping ports.

There’s a record backlog of ships that cannot dock, as well as shortages of workers, equipment, and a lack of coordination across the transportation industry. All consumer goods are in shorter supply, and so you may have fewer choices.

Designers are signaling that it is not necessary to decorate every inch of your home. Paint and a strategic use of accessories can be key. Shapes are important. The trick is to create a look that does not come across as unfinished.

Welcome back wallpaper!

One of the more surprising trends is the return of wallpaper. Don’t be fooled. This is not your parent’s wallpaper that dominated homes in decades past.

Once found in multiple rooms, when the time came to remove wallpaper, it usually ended in disaster and damage. Today’s wallpaper is elegant, luxurious looking, and very wall-friendly.
